Vintage Fountain Pens and Pencils

Our forthcoming pen sale contains some real rarities. Discovered at the bottom of a box of books was a small, indistinct brown box. Alexander Crum Ewing’s attention was immediately drawn to the item and was thrilled at the discovery. Research showed it to be a John Sheldon Patent Escritoir from 1845. This 4 inch rectangular box contains everything that the letter writer of the day required: a German silver pen that intriguingly is able to convert into a letter scale to check the weight for stamps, pen nibs, a lift-up ink stand, a compartment for postage stamps, another with gum wafers, a lift up box for wax lights, a compartment containing candles, sealing wax and an almanac for 1845. It is a truly remarkable piece of workmanship and a credit to the ingenuity, inventiveness and skill of John Sheldon. It is estimated at £500-800. There is an exceptionally good selection of early writing implements in the sale dating from 1770s through to the 1850s.

A sale highlight recently featured in the Financial Times is a rare Namiki pen from the early 1930s. These highly decorative pens have seen prices rise recently as more people are appreciating the beauty. This Namiki has the rare Heron and Willow in Moonlight design and is expected to realise £1500-2000.

For more modest budgets there is a large selection of modern used and unused pens that will be sold at prices well under their full retail price. Montblanc features heavily so why not throw away your cheap biros and buy something that will give years of pleasure. A perfect opportunity to treat yourself!
