English & Continental Furniture & Decorations

The May 17 auction showcases important English and Continental furniture and decorations from the 17th through early 19th centuries, as well as porcelain, Georgian silver, sculpture, clocks, chandeliers, sconces, tapestries and rugs. The Old Master Paintings section of the sale will offer landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance to the 19th century. A feature of the sale will be elegant furniture, decorations and paintings from the estate of legendary interior designer Robert Denning of Denning & Fourcade (lots 84-297). Highlights of the Denning estate include a Regency ebonized and parcel gilt side table with a specimen marble top (lot 290) and a set of four monumental Louis XVI style gilt-bronze three-light sconces (lot 289). Property of other owners includes a William and Mary walnut and floral marquetry month-going tall case clock, John Barnett, London (lot 427); a Louis XVI gilt-bronze and marble mantel clock, Merra a Paris (lot 593); and a William and Mary black and gilt lacquered tall case clock by John Ebsworth, London (lot 401). The selection of Old Master paintings offers Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery from the School of Jacopo Tintoretto (lot 31) and Allegorical Figures in a Landcape with Ruins from the School of Alessandro Magnasco (lot 32). British paintings include a Portrait of a Young Boy by William Keable (lot 63). Certain to attract attention is a group of four Neopolitan School gouaches depicting Views of Pompeian Ruins and the Isle of Capri (lot 13).
