Description
Dan Dailey (1947, USA)

Nude Surprised in the Garden
1998
Glass and bronze; ht. 30, wd. 9.5, lg. 24 in.

This work is from a small group of lamps that Dailey made in 1997-98. With this series he "wanted to create some three-dimensional figurative objects with a simplified image, making use of the quality of construction in a way that emphasizes the elements of the form. The figures convey gesture and attitude and the details of their anatomy are symbolic rather than realistic. I see these figures as symbols of certain human traits such as sensuality, arrogance, idolatry or servitude." He tried to create a feeling in each piece that has to do with the presence of character in the particular figure, in this case a posturing in a way which suggests a proud and independent attitude. The intention was for the works to have a "deluxe quality," glass, metal, patinas and colors emphasizes the purity of the polished glass or gold plated surfaces. The lamp globe is blown, cut and ground , the base is cut from Vitrolite sheet glass; ground, drilled, sandblasted and acid polished. The figures are constructed from bronze sheet and tube, fabricated and assembled with solder or screws; patinated, gold plated, or nickel-plated.
