Description
Late 18th century micromosaic table, micromosaic table top attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli (Italian, 1753-1836), central medallion with krater surrounded by beaded and ivy borders, flanked on each side by octagonal panels with incense burners, urns and other classical objects, all within an ornate scrolled field, Greek Key border, top and bottom with neoclassical heads, some losses to Sienna marble border, several but not all pieces present, minor losses of mosaic elements in one corner, several pieces present, missing one to two lines of white outer border and 1/2 x 1/4" area in corner, other losses to outer white border on opposing corner, repairs and filling on border about 4 x 8", 34 x 51-1/2 x 26-1/2", later painted and gilt wooden base with heads in relief, probably late 19th/early 20th century, lot accompanied by letter dated April 7, 1949, on letterhead of Doughnut Corporation of America discussing table and Adolph Levitt's gift of it to Hickory Museum of Art; for similar example see Christie's, New York, April 24, 2003, Lot 249. Two similar micromosaic tables are in the collection of the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia; one, attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli, features a chariot driven by stags; the second with "Pliny's Doves" is attributed to Antonio Moro.
