Chauncey M. Depew & Alexis Carrel CHAUNCEY M. DEPEW & ALEXIS CARREL. 1. Portrait Signed, “Faithfully Your Friend/ Chauncey M. Depew.”, in black ink, on a printed 10” x 7” photogravure--image is 5.75” x 3.75”--by Falk, 1887, Fine. Chauncey Mitchell Depew (1834-1928), a New York Senator 1899-1991, was considered as “king maker” being a perpetual delegate to Republican National Conventions (1868, 1892, 1896, 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, 1916, and 1924!). He was the hopeful candidate for Republican nomination for President in 1888 but returned to state politics. Light age and creases throughout; else fine. 2. Autograph Letter Signed “A. Carrel”, in black ink, on 7” x 5” paper, dated January 28, 1913, New York, Fine. Agreeing to dine with Mrs. Pulitzer. Alexis Carrel (1873-1944), attached to the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York, carried out experiments on tissue and organ transplants which earned him, in 1912, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Unfortunately, his accomplishments are overshadowed by the fact that Carrel returned to France to become the Director of the Carrel Foundation for the Study of Human Problems which was set up by the Vichy Government. (Can you say “collaborator”?) Light foxing/staining and mounting remnants on the reverse side, vertical crease does little to affect contents of letter; else fine. (2 items) A rather eclectic pair.
