General Horatio Gates Autograph Letter HORATIO GATES, American Revolution Major General who with Arnold forced Burgoyne's Surrender at Saratoga. Autograph Letter Signed, "Horatio Gates" in brown ink, July 20, 1771, New York, 3.25” x 7” oblong sheet, matted and framed along with a color image of General Gates, to an overall size of 21.5” x 15”, Choice Very Fine. Addressed to Mr. William Burton, Travellers Rest: "Please to deliver to Mr. John Mark, by The Tobacco belonging to me now in your Hands & his Receipt shall be a sufficient discharge to you for the same...” Gates (1728 - 1806) helped defeat Burgoyne at Saratoga, but was later examined by Congress for his disastrous defeat at Camden.
