Mammoth Early Trolley Photograph c. 1890 Huge New York City Trolley Car Albumen Photograph, Choice Very Fine. Image size 11.5” x 16.5,” mounted to a card backing to an overall size of 16” x 20.” The backing is evenly toned and has some waterstains on the left side, but the image is still nice, clean, and clear. This is a promotional piece for the John Stephenson Company of New York, makers of trolley cars and such conveyances, illustrating one of the cars they built for the Archway Tavern, Angel & Moorgate Street run, here parked in front of the Stephenson factory. This car has spiral staircases on either end, allowing riders to sit in the open air on an upper level. A great step back in time -- the closest thing we have today in New York city are the colorful, red sightseeing buses (however, for real transportation, one must go underground to the subways)!
