“Seat of War” Map 1866, “Map of The Seat of War to Accompany the American Conflict,” from Horace Greeley’s “The American Conflict,” Hartford: O.D. Case & Co., Choice Very Fine. 25.75” x 36.5”. Lithograph engraved by Oliver J. Stuart with original hand coloring. This detailed map of the southern part of the United States, the “Seat of War,” was issued just after the end of the Civil War as an accompaniment to Horace Greeley’s account of the conflict. It was designed to follow the events of the war and contains impressive detail of towns, borders, rivers, orography, and most importantly canals, roads and railroads. What is most interesting are the military routes taken by troops during the war which are indicated by lines with arrows on the map. There are some minor chips in the margins and a light stain across one fold. Beyond some separations and small sections missing at folds, which have been expertly repaired, the map is in very fine condition. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
