Continental Currency
Scarce Contemporary Counterfeit of the First “UNITED STATES” Continental Issue

May 20, 1777, $8, Contemporary Counterfeit, First “UNITED STATES” Continental Issue, Choice Crisp Extremely Fine+.
Pen Cancel and noted “Counterfeit” on the face. An exceptional example of this scarce “Tory” Contemporary Counterfeit of America’s first currency with the use of the name “The UNITED STATES”. This note was printed as a direct act of economic warfare against the struggling and financially ruined American Colonies while fighting for their independence from Britain. Special Broadsides were printed with specific details of false notes to aid in their detection, as well as specially printed sheets of authentic notes on blue colored paper. These special “Detector” notes to be used in comparison against those turned in to the major commerce and banking centers. This specimen was so detected and marked so as to no longer pass. A very pleasing example. Ex: EAHA Mail Bid Auction, February 13, 1993, Lot #266.
