Description
A late 19th C. "Schulklopfer's" Mallet with a Hebrew Inscription & Carving of a Lion. The inscription which is the same as the inscription on the mallet at the Jewish Museum (http://www.lessing-photo.com/dispimg.asp?i=30050628+&cr=30&cl=1) reads "In the House of God We Shall Go with Feeling". While the inscription appears to be the same the overall feeling of this mallet seems to have an Irish inspiration with the handle being similar to that of the Irish cudgel. This piece also appears to be made from Blackthorn and appears to have the same finish found on Irish Cudgels which are also frequently called Shillelagh's with the difference being found in the length of the stick. Our piece measures 21 inches in length and is quite heavy. There is a large split on one side of the boar which runs from front to back but has not gone more than 1/3 of an inch. Schulklopfer's Mallet, Irish Cudgel or both? We will leave that for you to decide.
Condition
Overall very good condition. One side of the head of the mallet has a split in the wood which runs the length of the head but does not go very deeply into the wood.
