Of major significance, Gope boards are among the most important objects in the Papuan Gulf region. Representing protective spirits, they were hung and placed all along the Haus (men's house) and were consulted when village raids were planned and it was believed that the spirit in habitating the board would go ahead of the war party to take away the enemy's strength. Of simple and elegant beauty, the enclosed features an ancestral figure.
