Title: California
Author: Mora, Jo[seph Jacinto]
Description: Color lithograph map. Sheet measures 63.7x48 cm. (25x19").This is the second and smaller California map by Jo Mora, as well as being his last map (he died in 1947). The Del Monte Canning Company commissioned the map as promotional item. As a means to save money the earliest printings of this map were issued on a thin paper resulting in poor color registration. Within a short time, the map began to be printed on a heavier paper stock, resulting in proper color strength and brightness. The present map is one of those printed on the improved thicker stock. This map is candy for the eyes, full of historical details, creatively and colorfully presented. In fact this 1945 map is much more detailed than Mora's 1927 effort, and adds such new structures as the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. See page 4 of Derek Hayes' excellent new book, Historical Atlas of California (Univ. of California) for a full-page reproduction of this wonderful map or carte as Mora preferred to describe his maps.
