Wright was a lawyer and unsuccessful pre-war politician who became Colonel of the 3rd Georgia in May 1861. Following a year’s inactivity Wright received a star in June 1862 and was assigned to the command of a Georgia brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia where his namesake brigade earned a reputation for aggressiveness second to none, their commander seriously wounded at Sharpsburg. At Gettysburg, Wright’s brigade single-handedly charged and nearly captured, but could not hold Cemetery Ridge on July 2. Following Gettysburg, Wright was elected president of the Georgia senate and conducted the state’s affairs from the field. He was promoted to Major General in November 1864 and finally returned to his home state where he held command for the last few months of the war. Afterwards, Wright re-entered the political arena but without success and died suddenly in December 1872.
