Nelson Eddy Coat from Balalaika

Nelson Eddy wore this unusually detailed costume in the 1939 musical BALALAIKA. In this opera, Eddy plays a Russian prince who leaves to fight in World War I. The long, off-white, heavy cashmere coat flares slightly at the waist, has red velvet and gold epaulets and matching decoration on the front ammunition pockets and around the sleeves. The piece has large hook and eye closures in the front and the upper half of the coat is lined. An image showing the piece in use in the film also comes with the lot. This costume is from the collection of Debbie Reynolds and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Ms. Reynolds. Proceeds from this sale go to benefit The Hollywood Motion Picture Museum. This striking piece is in amazingly good condition for its age. There are discoloration spots on the right sleeve and mid-right rear and very slight moth damage on the left rear side.
