This is the original ad that announced "Frankenstein". It first appeared in the Motion Picture Herald on November 21, 1931; sixteen days before the premiere release date, Dec. 6, 1931. It measures 18 x 12 inches and was a full double page spread. Universal was still uncertain how to market this unique feature. So, they came up with this unusual and slightly skewed ad, hoping it would appeal to all audiences. The "horror" aspect was underplayed using headshots of the cast in casual, even smiling poses. Karloff's monster seems almost gentle! The big selling lines were, "No man has ever seen his like" and "No woman's kiss has touched his lips". There was no hint that patrons might faint in their seats!Of course, when the picture opened and became an instant "horror classic", the entire ad campaign took on a whole new look. It is unknown how many of these original ads have survived over the years. Our researchers have not been able to locate another one. It is printed in two sections on high quality paper and is in excellent condition with only slight pin holes from the binding staples barely visible. A rare piece of original horror movie memorabilia.
