Signer of Declaration of Independence. ALS, "Wm Ellery Coll", as collector of the port of Newport, RI, 2 pp (single sheet), Oct 17, 1795, 8vo, to District Attorney Ray Greene. In small part, "...A Writ has been served on Aaron Sheffield, and Walter Channing on the bond given by them prior to the Registry of the Brig Rising Sun of which said Sheffield was master & sole owner...You will find by comparing the bond with the Act for Recording and registering Vessels with the tonnage of the vessel that the Penalty in the bond is conformable with the Sum required by the Act...I presume will be sufficient Evidence of his not having delivered the Register of the Rising Sun on his arrival in the United States...in this case the defendt, by his Petition has confessed that he disposed of the Regr...the Confession...is the strongest evidence against him..."
