Description

rescue a cat out of a tree, image area 5" square, on panel, well listed artist....Frank Whipple is known for his "Whipple's Wimples" paintings. Whipple has been painting his whimsical nun scenes since WWII. Frank Whipple was an Army journalist during the war and was stationed for a time in Italy where he had his first introduction to the Daughters of Charity, originally a French order of nuns organized by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac in 1633. Whipple was immediately drawn to their unique and fanciful headpieces known as "wimples" and these are symbolized in each of his paintings. He was also intrigued by the nun's serene, and seemingly unruffled, movement through the chaos of the streets of Rome during wartime. Frank Whipple came to know several of the ladies personally and was quick to observe that despite the fact their work revolved around the pain and suffering being experienced in the hospitals of war-torn Italy, these nuns maintained a positive and determined attitude that was tempered with light hearted, and occasionally mischievous, humor. He was inspired and, since that time, the artist has created thousands of colorful and uplifting original Whipple's Wimples paintings. Due to their popularity, many of Frank Whipple's original paintings have been transformed into limited edition art print format, making Whipple's Wimples more affordable, and available, to a much broader base of Whipple enthusiasts. Frank Whipple is a self-taught California artist whose works are shown in fine galleries nationwide as well as being exhibited in major cities around the world. Primarily known for his miniatures, and by careful use of form and color, he recreates a microcosmic view of a piece of the world around us. He is a master of the miniature still life, along with other subjects which include nudes, sensitive studies of children at play, and his most famed whimsical nun situations. "Whipple's Wimples," are little treasures and one finds oneself looking into them . . . and then looking again, as the subtle nuances reveal themselves to those who, like Frank Whipple, are curious enough to look more closely; and the stories begin to unfold. He is believed to be the first American artist to satirize the good white collar ladies, not without their blessings. Whipple's name and fame have grown as has demand for his works from collectors and admirers who line their walls with his paintings and prints. His followers range from the Who's Who in The Entertainment World to captains of industry, to political figures, to "just art lovers" who want to own one of the good little treasures in life.
