American political leader; prosecuted the Lincoln assassination conspirators. Civil War date ALS, "J Holt", 1 1/4pp, Feb 3, 1865, 8vo, Washington, to the noted engraver and historian Benson J Lossing (1813-91). In part, "...I should esteem it a great honor to have my likeness appear in the admirable work which you are publishing in illustration of the History of the Rebellion...however I have no photograph of myself..." Some blotting of ink and light toning, o/w VG.
