Gustav Stickley side chair c. 1903, designed by Harvey Ellis, important tall hump-back form with inlaid design in copper and pewter over a replaced rush seat, refinished, unsigned, 18.5"w x 19.5"d x 47.5"h, very good condition. From the collection of Dr. Edgar G. McKee. In the book "Gustav Stickley and the American Arts & Crafts Movement," contributor Sally-Anne Huxtable discusses this chair as: "Elegantly inlaid with an abstracted design adorning the central splat of the chair back, this side chair stands as one of the more graceful objects ever produced by Stickley. Significant elements of the design are the tall back with narrow, vertical splats, the gentle upward curve of the top of the chair, which is echoed in the downward curve of the front stretcher, and the simple straight lines of the narrow legs and horizontal stretchers. This chair draws inspiration from the exceptionally tall, throne-like chairs of 1890s British Arts and Crafts designers such as C.F.A. Voysey, M.H. Baillie Scott, George Walton, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh and their American contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright." Illustrated: Stickley Style: Arts & Crafts Homes in the Craftsman Tradition, by David Cathers and Alexander Vertikoff, page 172 Exhibited: "Gustav Stickley and the American Arts & Crafts Movement," organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and curated by Kevin Tucker, and illustrated in accompanying book of the same title, pages 152-153
