Description

Washington Medals
Original 1799 George Washington Funeral "Urn" Medal
1799 Washington Funeral Urn Medal. Struck in White Metal. Baker-166. Dies 4-C. Fine.
Rarity-6. 30mm. Holed at top for suspension as are most. Obv: small uniformed bust of George Washington in a wreath. Rev: Funeral Urn with script GW, concentric legend at left ends ARM. U.S with last letter final dot. This very collectable, more affordable example has some old obverse encrustation at "GL" near the rims. It shows actual wear and true use of being worn for some period of time, making it an interesting specimen with some details of Very Fine. These Urn medals were made for a civic funeral procession held on February 22, 1800. According to Rulau/Fuld (and we agree), "The funeral medals, while a small group, are among the most popular and eagerly sought mementos of Washington's life."
