We at CNY Book Auctions are pleased to be working with both The Boyce Thompson Institute for plant research, located here in Ithaca, New York on the Cornell University campus, and Mann Library, part of the Cornell University Library System. This particular auction lot is from the books that have been sent to us by Mann Library, not from the BTI library de-accession. Coincidentally, Mann has included many antique and scarce botany titles as well as approximately 1,200 cookbooks. Condition/Details:This scarce volume is a very early edition of Gray and Torrey’s landmark botany work, being volume 1, compiled over the course of three years from 1838-1840. Title page continues: “Containing abridged descriptions of all the known indigenous and naturalized plants growing north of Mexico; arranged according to the natural system.” Originally bound in half-leather with red cloth boards, the volume is lacking its spine, and the boards are detached. The binding is sturdy, and the pages are quite clean for a book of this age, with a small amount of light foxing.
