St. Raphaël / Quinquina. ca. 1922

Lot Passed

Artist: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) Size: 7 x 9 in./17.8 x 22.8 cm Appearing Verso: Charles Loupot's signature and studio addressLoupot created a visual signature for this brand of bitters featuring two waiters who would become, in a series of redesigns and refinements, the company trademark. What remained constant throughout was their comic contrast in physique and, for the most part, their representative colors–red and white. In this artwork, however, Loupot changes things up a bit: instead of confining the varieties of St. Raphaël to their embodiments, he surrounds them with it, thereby keeping the association intact while providing the waiters with new tonal traits–cool and chic. Effective, subtle, creative, and completely within promotional parameters.
