OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

This Ryan trainer plane has been on display in the Milhous Collection and has been suspended from the ceiling, following a restoration about 20 years ago. It is outfitted and presented in its period-correct war-era USAA C livery.

Ryan Aeronautical Company was founded in California in 1934 by T.C. Ryan, whose Ryan Airlines was previously known for building Charles Lindbergh's famous, record-setting Spirit of St. Louis. After extensive experience in trainer, aerobatic and various civilian aircraft production, Ryan garnered interest from the United States Army Air Corps, the predecessor to the Air Force. They ordered numerous trainer aircraft as pilot training was rapidly escalating for the impending American entrance into World War II. By this point, use of Menasco engines was abandoned in favor of Kinner air-cooled five-cylinder radial engines producing about 160 hp. Ryan trainers were built in several series, including PT -16, PT -20, PT -21 and finally the PT -22 Recruit, which was produced in the greatest numbers.

This particular Ryan is very nicely presented, and we understand it is mechanically complete, as it was in operation when purchased by the Milhous brothers 26 years ago. Its display and educational potential in any number of private and public collections is virtually limitless.
