Condition/Details:This huge volume is an extremely rare work by German Oriental rug authority Julius Lessing. The English translation of the title is, roughly, "Winding carpets and coverings of the Middle Ages in Germany." The work includes thirty large lithograph plates, several of which are printed as a continuous sheet, and in color. Lessing, who was the secret governmental advisor to the royal museum and director of the Koniglichen Museum of Arts and Crafts, wrote the seminal work "Orientalische Teppichmuster nach Bildern and Originalen des XV bis XVI Jahrhunderts" (Berlin, 1877). This book was part of the reference library at the Kansas City Public Library (non-circulating) and has been rebound in a library binding with the title in gilt on the cover. Solidly bound with light wear, several library attributes, and a re-backed title page. The plates are bright and clean.
