Condition/Details: This lovely and very rare set includes nine of twelve volumes (2-6, 8-9, 11-12) of this intriguing collection of observations on early America. The title page continues: "Of their governments, laws, politics, and resources; of the characters of their presidents, governors, legislators, magistrates, and military men; and of the customs, manners, morals, religion, virtues and vices of the people; comprising also a complete series of historical documents and remarks, from the end of the war in 1783, to the election of the president, in March, 1801." Cobbett, an Englishman, compiled many books and pamphlets based on his time spent in the new United States, and this set, printed in London, is the earliest collection of these works. The volumes are bound in full leather with gilt embellishments to the spine. The volumes are in varying condition with several boards detached and the front board missing on Vol. 8. The volumes have some external wear; titles, numbers and gilt design are discernible. The pages are solidly bound and legible with some foxing.
