William Ray Horrors of Slavery 1808 Tripoli

Sign In to see what this sold for

Author:William Ray
Title:Horrors of Slavery
Year:c1808

Condition/Details: This is an especially rare narrative of being held as a prisoner of war in Tripoli between 1803-05. Though Ray's poetry was published in American newspapers while he was still a prisoner, "Horrors of Slavery" was not well read in its day, and enjoyed only a single printing. The volume also contains some of his poetry, and leads with a poem called "Exordium." The front board bears the bookplate of Stoutenburgh's Circulating Library. An inscription on the rear endpaper indicates the book was purchased in 1812 at Albany, NY. The text begins with "Exordium," and ends near the beginning of Ray's poetry; anything else, including a possible title page, is absent. The "Horrors of Slavery" narrative is complete. Pages are age toned with some wear/tearing, binding intact. External wear, with leather beginning to peel from boards.
