Helvetius De L'esprit 1758 Rousseau Harcourt

Sign In to see what this sold for

Author:Helvetius
Title:De L'esprit, two volumes
Publisher: Durand (Paris)
Year:1758

Condition/Details: This set is an antique printing, in French, of Helvetius' "De L'esprit."" Although this is a ""Nouvelle edition,"" it is a very early revision, as the work was originally published in 1758. The work, intended to be a rival to Montisquieu's ""L'esprit des lois,"" was considered heretical when first published, and was publically burned. The text contains some early marginalia scattered throughout, and a note opposite the title page reads, "The manuscript notes in this book are copied form the manuscript notes of J. J. Rousseau." The front paste-down endpaper bears the bookplate of George Simon Harcourt, Viscount Nuneham, of Ireland (1736-1809), who was the Second Earl Harcourt. The volumes are bound in full leather with gilt and colored spine labels, and are in wonderful condition for their age. The bindings and hinges are intact with some wear to the boards and gutters, pages are quite bright with some scattered foxing.
