John Steuart Curry (1897-1946), american painter, born in Dunavant, Jefferson Co., Kansas. He spent his youth on his father's farm. In 1916 he entered the Kansas City Art Institute and later studied in Chicago and New York and in Paris. His early paintings of Kansas life, such as Baptism in Kansas, aroused interest by their simple and authentic character. He often chose typically American subject matter, from rural life to circus scenes, which he depicted with a dramatic flair. In addition to his oil paintings he is well known for his murals, such as those in the Dept. of Justice Building in Washington, D.C., and the statehouse in Topeka, Kans. John Steuart Curry was, with Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton, one of the three leading painters identified as Regionalists and known today for their canvases celebrating the rural Midwest. With these two artists Curry led the movement to create and celebrate what he felt was an indigenous and democratic American art - Regionalism - in a reaction against European modernist trends. Although Curry's career spanned only two decades - from 1924, when he first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, to his death in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1946 - Curry produced paintings that stand today as American cultural icons.
