Condition/Details: This intriguing volume is a “series of satirical drawings occasioned by some recent events performed by Beresford Egan, Gent., to which is added a preface by P. R. Stephensen, Gent., and a verse lampoon composed by several hands and now set forth for the first time, the whole very proper to be read both on family and public occasions.” The recent events to which the title page refers were the publication of Miss Radclyffe Hall’s novel “The Well of Loneliness,” a work sympathetic to lesbianism. The novel was criticized by “Sunday Express” writer James Douglas, calling for the book to be banned on account of its immorality. This work, then, is a lampoon of Douglas’ criticism and a satire of “The Well of Loneliness,” with six full-page illustrations by Egan. Also included is an anonymous poem mocking the incident, and a biting criticism of Douglas that serves as Stephensen’s preface. The work is also signed by Stephensen. This copy is No. 85 of 250 printed in this edition. The book is bound in paper boards with some splitting to the top of the front gutter, and is in otherwise in great condition, with clean pages and solid binding.
