Organizuyte izby chital'ni [Organize the Village Libraries], a poster drawn by Alexander Apsit (1880-1944) under the Skif [The Scythian] pseudonym. Published by the AgitProsvet (Propaganda and Enlightenment) Section of the All-Russian Bureau of Military Commissars, 1918. 79 x 51.5 cm.

Apsit's is an important name in the history of the Soviet poster - if not for the artist's considerable talent, then just because of the sheer volume of his output. In just two years, Apsit produced over 70 political posters, before running away from revolutionary Moscow.

Interestingly, the interior decoration of the village library in Apsit's design includes the ubiquitous Tsar, Priest, and Kulak poster - the first poster mass-produced under the aegis of VTsIK Publishing. See lot 8.
