DENI, V. The Peasant Mother of God, 1922

Sign In to see what this sold for

Selyanskaya Bogoroditsa [The Peasant Mother of God], a poster by Victor Deni (Victor Denisov, 1893-1946, Meritorious Art Worker of the Russian Federation). Published by 20-th Printing Works (former Kushnerev Printing Works), Moscow, [1922]. 44 x 31.5 cm.

This poster accuses the right wing of the Socialist Revolutionary party (popular among Russian peasants) of supporting the White forces. SRs are represented by the figure of the party leader, Chernov. In reality, Chernov opposed both the Bolshevik takeover and the White movement (he was even arrested by pro-Kolchak officers, but rescued by the Czech legionnaires), but historic accuracy was never considered Deni's strong suit.

Some sources date this poster to the 1919 anti-Kolchak campaign, while other state that the poster was prepared for the 1922 trial of right-wing SR leaders in Moscow. It appears likely that there two (or more) printings, the first one in 1919 in Kazan', where Deni was working for the Army of the Volga Region, and the last one in Moscow in 1922 .
