Krasnaya Armiya - armiya rabochikh i krest'yan [The Red Army is the Army of Workers and Peasants], a Constructivist photomontage poster by an anonymous artist. [GIZ], 1927, 100 x 69 cm.
N. Baburina thought well enough of this design to include it in her "Russian Constructivist Poster" monograph. One may also use it to contemplate how the language of the Soviet avant-garde had been co-opted to become a widely accepted vernacular used for the mundane tasks of political propaganda. Lissitzky's The Red Wedge was abstract, dynamic, and dealt with an epic struggle. In comparison, this 1927 poster deals with an important but less urgent task of reassuring the viewer that the State had succeeded in raising a cadre of politically reliable Red Army commanders of peasant and proletarian origin. It is not surprising that the composition is now static; more telling is the notion that a reference to an archetypal symbol is deemed insufficient - the red wedge is "reinforced" with a human face Search extension words / key tags: Russian poster, Soviet propaganda.
