GITSEVICH, V. Start Raising Rabbits, 1932

Komsomol'tsy i pionery, razvodite Krolikov [Komsomol Members, and Young Pioneers, Start Raising Rabbits], a photomontage poster by Vera Gitsevich (1897-1976). Published by OGIZ-IZOGIZ, Moscow-Leningrad, 1932. 90 x 64 cm.

Vera Gitsevich was a life-long close collaborator and friend of Victor Koretsky. Her name appears next to Koretsky's name on a large number of posters; in 1930s, they also worked together on stage design projects.

The poster's unusual topic stems from a decision by the Moscow Party Committee to develop local food supplies that would complement food deliveries to the capital from the traditional sources. This sound idea originated with none else but Nikita Khrushchev, at the time the protégé of Moscow Party Secretary Lazar Kaganovich. As was often the case with Khrushchev's ideas, its implementation was marred by comic excesses. Among the measures ordered was a curious requirement that every Moscow school should maintain a rabbit hutch.

Search extension words / key tags: Russian Constructivist poster, Soviet propaganda.
