Papa na strazhe [The Pope on Sentry Duty], a poster by Boris Efimov (Boris Friedland, 1900-2008, People's Artist of the Soviet Union). Published by OGIZ-IZOGIZ, Moscow-Leningrad, 1932. 59 x 42.8 cm.
One of the best known Soviet political posterists and caricaturists, Boris Efimov started his artistic career in Kiev during the Civil War. Amazingly, he was still drawing caricatures ninety years later at the age of 108. Efimov's caricatures were regularly published by Pravda even after the arrest and subsequent execution of his brother, the leading Soviet journalist Mikhail Koltsov. This poster accuses the Catholic Church of being one of the main instigators of the anti-Soviet propaganda campaign abroad. It suggests that the Vatican has ulterior motives in trying to push the West into a war with the Soviet Union - the Church is heavily invested into arms manufacturers stocks, and will benefit financially from an arms race. A poster on the same topic by V. Deni was offered in our May 2011 sale (lot 64). Search extension words / key tags: Russian poster, Soviet propaganda.
