Purchased by current consignor at a flea markrt auction in c. 2009. Verbally authenticated from digital photos by W. Steve Seltzer, O.C. Seltzer's grandson, via email, 12-30-2011
Condition reportAs viewed under room light in the unopened frame: yellowed; partially faded with losses of color; the corrugated cardboard texture on recto of board appears to be part of the board or watercolor and not a condition problem; backing paper with label and frame are as is. In the before mentioned authentication email, W. Steve Seltzer, besides authenicating the work, also talks about the condition of the watercolor: "I feel confident in saying that this is an original O.C Seltzer work. There are many forgeries of his work but this one is OK. Unfortunately, it is in terrible condition. The watercolor has faded so much in certain areas that the value relationships are all out of whack. The transparent washes have disappeared and left the gouache way too strong. It is most evident in the split-horn bonnet that the indian is wearing. The rest of the figure also has problems with some color gone and other color too strong in value. The painting was undoubtedly exposed to sunlight over the years and this has caused considerable damage." rf
