JAPANESE CARVED, GILT & POLYCHROME WOOD BUDDHA AMIDA, ANTIQUE, H 5", 6" OVERALL:The small figure depicts the Buddha Amida seated in the lotus position, with gilt decoration, traces of polychrome and a jewel like accoutrement as his third eye. It appears as though his right hand displays the Varada Mudra (fulfillment of all wishes; the gesture of charity) and he holds something in his left hand, probably a vajra. Possibly from the Edo period.
Condition reportSee photo. There is a large portion of loss at the front section of the base (on which the figure is seated). Losses to the gilt decoration is evident. Cracking and chips evident as well-as to be expected, due to the obvious age of the piece. The base may be a marriage piece. As is condition. Very interesting item. RG
