18th century German School Portrait of Johann Christoph Bröse, with a portrait by another hand of his wife, Johanna Christina Sophia, pastels, the former on laid paper over canvas, the latter on vellum, c.1770 and c.1780, respectively, the former 46 x 38.5cm (18 1/8 x 15 1/8 in), the latter 47 x 38cm (18 1/2 x 15 in) (2) ***Johann Christoph Bröse (1730-1787) was a clothier in Bitterfeld, also known as Wolfen-Bitterfeld, near Leipzig.
