***Johann Christoph Bröse (1730-1787) was a clothier in Bitterfeld, also known as Wolfen-Bitterfeld, near Leipzig. This was quite a centre for pastel artists, many of whom trained under Adam Friedrich Oeser (1717-1799) - see Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, London, 2006; online edition at pastellists.com..
