The Hon. Miss Louisa Stuart de Rothsay, later Marchioness of Waterford (1818-1891) Portrait of Queen Victoria, the young queen seated on a throne, in white dress with blue sash, holding a fan, watercolour extensively heightened with gum-arabic, signed with monogram LS lower left, inscribed and dated on album leaf support in a contemporary hand, By Miss Stuart de Rothsay 1838, 20 x 14cm (7 7/8 x 5 1/2 in), mounted in the remnants of a mid 19th century album containing a mixed group of prints, silhouettes, drawings and watercolours by various hands, including a classical landscape by the Hon. Thomas Liddell (1800-1856), and others by Phillip Borrowman, lacking boards, oblong 4to.

***Louisa Anne, Marchioness of Waterford; Pre-raphaelite watercolourist and philanthropist, was tutored by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Ruskin. She was the daughter of Charles Stuart, first Baron Stuart de Rothsay (1779-1845), British ambassador in Paris, where Louisa and her sister, Charlotte Stuart, were born. In 1842, Louisa married Henry Bedford, third Marquis of Waterford, and thenceforth signed her paintings with the monogram LW. In the same year, Charlotte Stuart, also a prolific artist, became Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria. She married Charles, first Viscount Canning, who was appointed Governor General of India in 1856..
