Ernest Proctor (1886-1935) Interior view of Albert Cathedral from ruins of the town at the West end, watercolour, signed with inscription and dated in pencil, lower right, 1919, 49.5 x 31.5cm (19 1/2 x 12 1/4 in). ***The Cathedral of Albert was hit by a German shell in 1915 where the basilica was partly destroyed and the Cathedral's statue of the Virgin and Child dislodged. Soon after the shelling the Virgin and Child statue was fixed into place at a right angle onto the Cathedral's bell tower by French engineers. The Cathedral became a well known sight to soldiers going to the front line. For many the Cathedral and statue symbolized the destructiveness and craziness of war. In 1918 the statue was knocked down by British artillery and never recovered, and thus not included in this drawing from 1919.. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
