Antonio Cioci View of the Monastery of Vallombrosa near Florence, with 9 part key, etching, on watermarked laid paper, c.1730, on 4 sheets, unjoined, each sheet c.780 x 490mm (30 3/4 x 19 1/4 in), when joined, platemark c.560 x 1450mm (22 x 57 in), unframed. ***Rare. The Benedictine abbey Vallombrosa was founded by Giovanni Gualberto in 1038, and became the mother house of the Vallumbrosan Order. Situated in the Apennines, just south of Florence, it is surrounded by woodland. The poetic description by John Milton in Paradise Lost of 'autumnal leaves that strow the brooks, in Vallombrosa' was somewhat responsible for encouraging many later travellers to visit the site, including Wordsworth and Shelley among others..
