or Heroic Stories of the Taiheiki, oban colour woodblock prints, all signed and with date and censor seals for 1847-50, published by Yamamoto-ya Heikichi, mounted concertina-style in patterned silk boards, each 365 x 245mm (14 3/8 x 9 5/8 in).

***Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) effectively created the genre of the warrior hero in Japanese prints, epitomised in his depiction of this series of characters from the civil wars of the late 16th century, known as the Taiheiki or 'Grand Pacification'. This album contains almost half of his original series of 50 portraits, created around 1848-49..
