Description School: New York. Circa 1840 to 1860. Overall length: 60”. Barrel length: 44 – ½” (original). Octagon to round barrel. Percussion (now Flintlock) mechanism. Obvious re-conversion. Two-piece patchbox. Walnut stock. Stock restoration: lengthened 30”. No carvings. Converted to flint but was never a flintlock. This walnut stocked gun is typically from the central region of New York with its walnut stock and side-opening brass patchbox which has a one-piece surround and also six piercings. The octagonal to round barrel is original; however, the full 30” of forestock are replaced (or added as this gun may have been a “half-stock” originally). Importantly, the gun was never a flintlock but has had modern parts added to give the impression of a flintlock. The original portion of the stock has a mellow original finish, and also there is a full brass “cap-box” which envelops the cheek-piece.
Condition (Fair).
