Description Dated 1861. Framed under glass. Signed letter with LOA. Staining to matting. With this document, Lincoln is appointing George L. Hartsuff to Judge Adjutant General with the rank of Captain. The document is dated March 22, 1861. Hartsuff was later promoted to Brigadier General and was wounded at Antietam. In 1863, Hartsuff was promoted to Major General and served with General Ambrose Burnside in the Knoxville Campaign. In 1865, he resigned from the regular Army because of disability from wounds received in battle. He died May 16, 1874 and is buried at West Point Cemetery.
