Jan Van Chelminski (Polish, 1851-1925), Sleighing Party 

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1886 l.r.; 19.25 x 29.5 in.

Collected by both Europeans and Americans, Chelminski's academic works were typically well-researched and highly detailed paintings of the Napoleonic War era. Some of his most popular works depict snowy winter scenes with soldiers on horseback, like the one offered here. 

Craquelure and slightly darkened varnish. Painting has never been restored and is fully clean under blacklight.
