New England Figured Maple Signed Butler's Desk
New England, ca 1820-1825. A standing butler's desk in curly maple, cherry and pine, the top drawer opening to a fitted interior."John Buckman" signed on one document drawer, and "Thomas Milewski, Dec. 1902" (probably a refinisher) twice on the other; the interior over three crossbanded drawers, rising on reeded legs; ht. 42.5, wd. 42.25, dp. 22 in. A John Buckman,Jr.(MA, 1745-1792), cabinet maker, coffiner and owner of the Buckman Tavern in Lexington, MA. is listed in tax records in 1780. However, this piece is too late to have been made by John Buckman, Jr.; it may be the work of a son, although there is no record of same.
