American, a painted plaster life mask of John James Audubon (1785-1851), with label on interior that reads Cast of the life mask made by Robert Havell in London, April 1830; original is in the John E. Thayer Collection, Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard College. Restored, molded, and cast by Donald Baird.; lg. 8 in. Robert Havell was the London engraver operating a shop, Havell & Son when Audubon approached him in 1827 to engrave a portfolio of 240 drawings he had from America.
