A CHINESE EXPORT RED LACQUERED WEDDING CABINET WITH GILT PAINTED DETAIL
Qing Dynasty, Late 19th Century The muslin covered frame of the cabinet masks the grain of the fir wood which is richly lacquered in Chinese red and adorned with hand painted gilt temple and garden scenes with small blue and red robed figures in repose; the scenes are enclosed in diaper pattern grillwork and floral reserves. The plain cornice supported by two doors with wooden hinges and flanked by two panels; full height reserves are supported by horizontal reserve with Chinese symbols of ""good luck"", set among a feather pattern. All supported by an open fretwork apron with block feet. Condition: Wood shrinkage to frame and warping commensurate with age. Restorations and overpainting to right door and legs.
