Chinese hand carved scholar's desk ink stone carved from swallow stone or bat stone holding ancient trilobites. 500 million year old fossils formed in the Cambrian period of the Palaeozoic Era. The original fossil was found near Beijing, China and given to Edward H. and Natalie F. Coleman by Professor Zhu Chuanyi, Deputy Director of the Asia and the Pacific Region Economic Research Institute (APERI), Research Fellow, Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Scienes (CASS) in Beijing, China. Measures 6 7/8" length x 5 1/8" width x 1" height (17.4cm x 13cm x 2.5cm). Total weight of 630 grams.
