RARE CHINESE KUAN TYPE GLAZED BRUSH WASHER

Rare Chinese Kuan type glazed brush washer. Dating from the Ming Dynasty or earlier, this brush washer is in the form of a flower shaped vessel. The total surface is typical of Song Dynasty Kuan Ware. The vessel is resting on 3 pointed evenly spaced legs of stylized clouds. The base is glazed with spur marks which function in the firing of the piece (Northern Sung Kuan ware is completely glazed and fired on support spurs. The glaze layer is rich and thick, displays a good deal of crackle, and had tiny spur-marks which generally lie close to the inner edge of the food ring. Provided the above conditions are met and the glaze is sky blue or greenish blue types, one can be doubly certain it is of Northern Sung Kuan Ware.....From a summary of Chinese Ceramics, volume 2...Sung Wares by Liu Linang-Yu).
