Abbie and Slats daily, 4/8/47, 5"x19", inscribed "To Eugene Mumaw with best wishes - R. Van Buren." Distributed by United Feature Syndicate, this strip centered on a wily young orphan from New York who travels a great distance to meet his only relative in the small town of Crabtree Corners. His severe older cousin, Abigail Scrapple, re-names him Slats (his birth name was Aubrey Eustace Scrapple) and thus began their barb-trading adventures. The strip ran until 1971, when van Buren retired at the age of 80.
